You just can’t stop Katniss Everdeen.
“The Hunger Games” ruled the box-office charts for the third straight week, earning $33.5 million for a cumulative gross of $302.8 million.
“American Reunion” came second with a pretty decent haul of $21.5 million — I was kind of surprised by that, as the utter lack of buzz on the film, either positive or negative, had me thinking no one would come out to see it — while the 3D re-release of James Cameron’s “Titanic” placed third with $17.4 million. The 3D conversion cost Paramount and Fox $18 million, so at least they’ll make their money back … though of course any re-release of “Titanic” would be profitable at this point; the damn thing’s made $1.9 billion worldwide.
“Wrath of the Titans” and “Mirror Mirror” rounded out the top five with $15 million and $11 million, respectively. And adding insult to injury, Andrew Stanton’s much-maligned fantasy epic “John Carter” is still hanging on, placing ninth with a piddly $820,000.
Maybe it’ll find its audience on Blu-ray. That still happens, right?
