Old Man, New Friends

Spotlight won him a couple of Oscars — and deservedly so — but The Visitor is Tom McCarthy’s best movie, a compassionate and moving drama that encapsulates his philosophy as a filmmaker and a person: Listen, and be kind.

How strange that I should be presenting it tonight at Harbourfront Free Flicks just two days after Abbas Kiarostami’s death reminded us of the value of that perspective.

Also, it’s funny and clever and Richard Jenkins should have won every award on the face of the earth for his performance in it. (Here’s my NOW review from its original release in 2008.)

Anyway, come on down. You’ll like it.
