Mysteries of the Deep

I’ve sat down with Athina Rachel Tsangari a number of times over the years, so when the opportunity came up to book her for an episode of Someone Else’s Movie, you know I leapt at it — she’s a delightful person and a keen theorist, so why wouldn’t I want to get her talking about something she loves for an hour?

Well, she did not disappoint: Athina chose Mati Diop’s hallucinatory romance Atlantics, and the resulting conversation is as allusive and unquantifiable as the film under discussion. Athina also managed to weave in a thread on the Netflix show Ozark, making connections between the two projects that shouldn’t make sense — but absolutely do. You’ll want to hear that, I think.

What’s stopping you? You know the drill: Subscribe on Apple PodcastsGoogle Play and Stitcher and get the episode immediately, or download it directly from the web.

And then check out the most recent episodes of NOW What, featuring Friday’s conversation about reopening restaurant patios with Nat, Lawrence La Pianta and Jamieson Kerr, and today’s summer TV panel, in which Nat, Glenn, Kevin, Richard and I run through a couple dozen shows — and a few movies — people might want to watch while they wait for all this to blow over.

Also! Other writing! Here are my reviews of The Old GuardGreyhound and the new CBC documentary Above the Law, and a thing I wrote about TIFF’s new streaming platform, which is decidedly not the game-changer it might have been.

Writing is such a pleasant distraction, you know.
