Well, hell. Two of the worst movies I’ve seen this year, “End of Watch” and “Trouble with the Curve“, did strong business at the box office this weekend, along with “House at the End of the Street”, which I have not seen but which nobody likes.
As of yesterday, studio estimates had “End” and “House” making about $13 million apiece to tie for first place, with “Curve” was close behind with $12.7 million. When the final tallies come down later today, any one of those three could end up the number-one earner.
Meanwhile, “Dredd“, which is pretty decent, crawled into sixth place with $6.3 million, behind “Finding Nemo” and “Resident Evil: Retribution”, which made $9.4 million and $6.7 million, respectively. All three of those are 3D releases; their numbers would be substantially lower if they’d been released exclusively in 2D.
And whither “The Master“, which did such great per-screen numbers last week in just five venues? It’s in seventh place with $5 million, which is pretty decent for a picture that’s still essentially a specialty run. So, yay.
