An Incredible Friday, Probably

With everyone getting out of Pixar’s way, pickings are pretty slim this week. But as it turns out, all four of today’s releases are pretty watchable — and diverse enough that there ought to be something for everybody.

Unless you had high hopes for that Superfly remake, I guess.

Beast: Michael Pearce’s thriller has atmosphere, intensity and a strong lead performance … but so does almost every BBC mystery series in the last five years, you know? (Jessie Buckley’s pretty great in it, though.)

Becoming Who I Was: The last third of Moon Chang-Yong and Jeong Jin’s documentary about a child monk and his elderly mentor is a great movie. The first two-thirds are not, and there’s really no way to reconcile the two. So … maybe just show up late?

Incredibles 2: Brad Bird picks up the Parr family saga exactly where he left off, and proceeds to do exactly the same things with it that he did the first time around. Which is pretty enjoyable, but also kind of frustrating.

Tag: A bunch of guys in their 30s and 40s pretend to be the same age for the purposes of frantic, silly comedy. It turns out that  this is a thing I can totally get behind. (Also, Leslie Bibb does some truly terrifying jaw-clenching as Jeremy Renner’s fiancee. )

See? It’s that kind of week.

Oh, and if you’re going to be out and about in the east end tomorrow afternoon (which is Saturday, June 16th), come by the Danforth Thrill of the Grill festival! I’ll be there eating corn as a celebrity judge from noon to 3:30 pm. I have no idea why they keep asking me to do this, but it’s for a good cause and there’s plenty of other food and drink around.

  1. Wish you had been the one to review The Staircase on Netflix. Having binged it over a few days, couldn’t understand the 1-star review in Now Magazine despite some legit problems with it. Even if you hated it, you’d have been entertaining about it in the review.
