On this week’s episode of Someone Else’s Movie, I get to talk about art cinema with an actual artist.
Roughly a year after we taped our segment of CBC’s The Filmmakers — where, oddly enough, we talked about someone else’s movie — Sook-Yin Lee joins me to discuss Ali: Fear Eats the Soul, Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s 1973 interpretation of Douglas Sirk’s All That Heaven Allows, and a film that has at least one key echo in Sook-Yin’s new movie Octavio is Dead!, which opens this Friday in Toronto and Regina.
Here’s a fun fact: It was only an hour or so after we’d recorded the episode that I realized neither of us had brought up Todd Haynes’ Far from Heaven, which kinda-sorta remakes Sirk’s original through the lens of Fassbinder’s film. But it’s a good episode just the same.
