It’s not a total surprise that “The Hunger Games” retained the top spot at the North American box office for a second weekend; what’s surprising is how strongly it continues to perform. The $61.1 million take pushes its total gross to $251 million in just ten days, or one whole “John Carter”.

The weekend’s new releases did okay. “Wrath of the Titans” grossed $34.2 million, finishing second, while “Mirror Mirror” placed third with $19 million. Against a monster like “The Hunger Games”, those are entirely respectable numbers.

I’m sure the makers of “Wrath” would have preferred to break $40 million, but of course I’m sure the makers of “Mirror Mirror” would have preferred to do the same …
