There’s plenty of stuff opening today, including two TIFF catch-ups, but first let’s take a moment to remember Garry Shandling, who died suddenly and far too soon yesterday.
Okay, now let’s get to that other crushing disappointment.
Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice: In which we discover that Zack Snyder is about as good at Batman as he is at Superman. What a disappointment.
The Clan: Pablo Trapero’s true-crime thriller — the story of an Argentine family that ran a side business in kidnapping and the occasional murder in 1980s Buenos Aires — goes a little overboard on portent and intensity, but it certainly has its moments.
Eye in the Sky: Rendition director Gavin Hood returns to the war on terror with this ticking-clock thriller about drone warfare, featuring Aaron Paul, Helen Mirren, Barkhad Abdi and the late Alan Rickman. Rad thought it was okay.
Life Off Grid: Jonathan Taggart’s documentary will show you what it’s like to wean yourself off the hydroelectric teat, maaaan. Susan thought it was kind of fun.
The Lobster: Yorgos Lanthimos, visionary director of Dogtooth and ALPS, makes his English-language debut with this dystopian romance starring Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz and Olivia Colman, among others. Glenn is all in.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2: Why, God, why? Susan tries really hard to find some merit in Nia Vardalos’ entirely unnecessary sequel. Better her than me, is all I can say.
Happy Good Friday, everybody! Your Kryptonian savior will rise again on Sunday, don’t you worry.
