To the Whatever

TIFF 2012 is in full swing, and I’m bouncing all over downtown Toronto like a pinball, just like I do every year. I’ve already hit that unique state of grace that comes from being utterly at the mercy of a dozen other schedules; I know that nothing will go precisely as I’ve planned, but then you find yourself in a room with Christopher Walken and Sam Rockwell — two actors you would crawl across Death Valley to meet.

And in that moment, it doesn’t matter that you’re running an hour behind and you can see the rest of your day collapsing like dominoes toppling over in an elaborate pattern. It doesn’t matter at all, because Christopher Walken is telling you a story, and you didn’t know it, but you’d been waiting your whole life to hear that story.

So that’s what I did yesterday, along with some other stuff. It’ll all turn up on the web eventually; watch this space — and follow my Twitter feed — for updates. In the meantime, I can offer you a snippet of my interview with “Looper” director Rian Johnson, who’s a really nice guy and made a hell of a movie. But he’s no Christopher Walken.
