This happens every year, so you’d think we’d be used to it by now. But nope, April comes and every film festival in Toronto smashes down on us and also there’s a dozen movies opening every Friday and it’s all everything all the time.
So, this week on the NOW site I run down a few of the month’s micro-festivals, and I also talked to Lynne Ramsay about what she and Joaquin Phoenix have accomplished with You Were Never Really Here, which is genuinely something. Oh, and I took a look at the new Lost in Space. And then there’s all the Hot Docs stuff, which should be going live any day now.
Aaaaany day now.
Not a current movie comment but, just because it finally hit the Movie Channel, the remake of Flatliners really missed its best opportunity. Kiefer Sutherland was cast as the dean of the medical school and was somehow not the same character as he played in the original later in his career (I double-checked the names after) and at no point did he confront the current crop of morbidly minded medical students with an exasperated, “Do you think you’re the first bunch of idiots who tried this?” as he put them all on academic probation. Kept waiting for it. Was disappointed.
