Same Again

Can’t someone make it stop?

The stupid sparkly “Breaking Dawn, Part 1” held onto first place for a third weekend, and while it’s heartening to see that it only grossed $16.9 million, it’s equally disheartening that nothing else was able to overtake its declining ass.

“The Muppets” hung onto second place with $11.2 million; Scorsese’s “Hugo” jumped into third with $7.9 million and “Arthur Christmas” held fourth with $7.4 million. “Happy Feet Two” dropped down to fifth with a piddly $6 million.  (Poor penguins.)

The worst thing about all of this? The movie that will finally knock the sparkle vampires out of the top spot next weekend will probably be Garry Marshall’s “New Year’s Eve”, because it’s the only major studio release opening. This in no way constitutes an endorsement.

  1. Don’t Young Adult, The Sitter, and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy also open this weekend? Not that any of them are likely to beat New Year’s Eve, but I’d think that one or more of them could outgross a declining Twilight in its fourth week. At its current trajectory, Twilight should be down to about $8 million by then.
