The new NOW is out, and it is my annual job to review the Oscar shorts — since the Documentary, Animated and Live-Action packages will all be screening at the Lightbox starting tomorrow — and try to figure out which ones have the edge at winning in their respective categories. I do not care about Oscar pools. They make me do that bit. But at least I got to watch a lot of shorts.
Speaking of things that are in the running for prizes, the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television rolled out its nominations for this year’s Canadian Screen Awards, and of course I had some thoughts. No English-language contenders for Best Picture! This, like, will not stand, man.
Also! This week’s screening spotlight falls upon Nathalie Atkinson’s Designing the Movies series at the Revue Cinema, which is showing Boom! tonight for some weird reason. And my Superhero Nonsense! column focuses on the news earlier this week that FX is ending Legion but finally launching Y: The Last Man. Feels good.
One more thing: The very good documentary Horror Noire, about the depiction of black people and black culture in American cinema over the last century, drops on Shudder today and is very, very good. You should get a subscription and check it out.
