Classics, Enhanced

Samurai Numfar! Do the dance of joy!My latest MSN DVD column is up, and it’s a big ‘un, covering the Blu-ray releases of “Seven Samurai”, “Psycho” and “Apocalypse Now” — all of which more than merit a high-definition revisitation.

(And for those of you checking off titles on the TIFF Essential Cinema list, that’s numbers six, sixty-eight and forty-six, respectively. Collect them all!)

There’s also so much other stuff coming out this week that we had to roll the calendar onto a second page; it’s been a while since we’ve done that. Feels good. Feels comprehenslve. Go read it!

  1. Future Shop wouldn’t sell me the Apocalypse Now Full Disclosure set because they said they were contacted by the manufacturer and told the discs were defective. I haven’t heard about this from any other retailer or online, have you heard anything about it?

  2. I’ve heard that the Canadian release is missing a booklet that’s supposed to come in the package. Not sure if the discs themselves are defective.

  3. I’ve heard of some problems with the three-disc release (which would explain why I haven’t been able to find it for sale in any Toronto stores), and I’ve asked Maple for the specifics; they said they’d have some information for me tomorrow. I’ll post it below as soon as I have it.

  4. From what I dug up today, it appears the discs are also mislabeled. The disc containing the movie(s) says “Special Features” and vice versa.

  5. I’m still waiting to hear from Maple officially, but thedigitalbits.com has some news — apparently some “Full Disclosure” sets have mislabeled discs (which Josh describes above), and the sets are missing the booklet included in Lionsgate’s U.S. release. Details here:

Bill says anyone who picked up the set before it was yanked can contact Maple at info@maplepictures.com to arrange an exchange. (And everyone else can order the American release from Amazon.com …)
