Alone in England

If you notice a little more frantic energy than usual at the start of this week’s episode of Someone Else’s Movie, well, I can explain.

Due to an e-mail snarl, I was informed that Level 16 star Katie Douglas and I would be discussing a different movie than the one she showed up to talk about, which necessitated a last-minute scramble and a little moment of panic on both our parts.

But everything worked out fine, because Katie wanted to talk about The Selfish Giant, and I was well prepared for that; Clio Barnard’s tender, shattering study of two young friends working as scrap dealers in the north of England has haunted me ever since I first saw it five years ago. It’s haunted Katie, too.
