Time After Time

This week’s episode of Someone Else’s Movie — recorded during last month’s London trip — is a genuine format-breaker.

That’s because Charlie Lyne, a documentary filmmaker whose work includes Beyond CluelessFear Itself and the recently released short Lasting Marks — streaming now for free at his website, along with much of his other stuff — wanted to talk about Christian Marclay’s The Clock.

Here’s the twist: The Clock is not technically a movie, being a 24-hour gallery installation that tells you what time it is by showing you a clip from film or TV in which the time is represented on-screen. I’ve seen some of it, having wandered into the thing at the Southbank Centre a few years ago; it’s fascinating, and a remarkable accomplishment if you think about it for even a moment. And Charlie is a montage filmmaker, so it made perfect sense that he’d choose it — and that our conversation would be as interesting as it is.
