The Purge savaged all comers at the megaplex this weekend, bringing in $36.4 million and leaving the weekend’s other big studio picture, The Internship, in the dust.
Sadly unable to turn the megaplex into the Googleplex, Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson’s dreadful reunion limped into fourth place with just $18.1 million — Wedding Crashers fans having long since moved on — while Fast & Furious 6 and Now You See Me slipped past with $19.8 and $19.5 million, respectively.
Having not yet seen The Purge myself, I can only hope that its success leads people to that other Ethan Hawke movie in theatres now. Because it’s great, and I’m sure Richard Linklater could use a few bucks.
