Something to Crow About

This week on Someone Else’s Movie, I mount my most ambitious Zoom recording to date: Guled Abdi, Vance Banzo, Tim Bishop and Franco Nguyen of Tallboyz, in four different locations. But other than a couple of pauses where we figure out who’s going to speak, I think it all came together pretty well!

It also helps that the movie we’re discussing is Steven Spielberg’s Hook, a noisy, messy 1991 fantasy adventure with lots of children screaming and shouting and flying around yelling “bangarang” while Robin Williams finds an oddly poignant take on a grown-up Peter Pan.

Want to listen? Of course you do! So subscribe on Apple PodcastsGoogle Play and Stitcher and get the episode immediately, or download it directly from the web and get in on all the weird, riffy goodness. And then catch the season premiere of Tallboyz tonight on CBC at 9:30 pm, why not?

You should also grab the latest episode of NOW What, which looks at the rise of the Substack newsletter over this past plague year, and more specifically the way in which Toronto writers have embraced the platform to ampify their individual voices.

It is perhaps not a coincidence that NOW just launched NOW Streaming, our very own Substack newsletter, written by yours truly, so I talked to Kat Angus of Kat Watches Everything, Matt Elliott of City Hall Watcher and Andrew Stoeten of The Batflip about their own work, and what they think of this latest New Normal. Jump on it!
