On this week’s episode of Someone Else’s Movie, I welcome filmmaker Robin McKenna, a documentarian whose latest project, Gift, looks at the many ways people create, contribute and receive. It’s a curious meditation on creativity and generosity — and grace, too — and it’s worth seeking out if you have any interest in the philosophical question of what we owe to each other in the world.
Oddly enough (or maybe not so oddly), Robin wanted to talk about Jim Jarmusch’s Dead Man, the entrancing alt-Western starring Johnny Depp as an 18th-century accountant named William Blake who finds himself adrift in frontier America, accompanied by an eccentric outcast called Nobody (the marvelous Gary Farmer). It’s … sort of relevant to her interests. And it’s a hell of a movie, so you should hear what she has to say.
