Jackass Ascendant

bad-grandpa-jackassWell, something was bound to knock Gravity off the top of the charts, and a Jackass movie makes a nice contrast.

Jackass Presents Bad Grandpa opened with $32 million — just a little more than Gravity made last weekend — to conquer the frame, while Gravity dropped to second place with a decent $20.3 million, on track to break $200 million by the end of the week.

Captain Phillips slipped to third with $11.8 million, while The Counselor, which is horrible, opened in fourth with $8 million. So there’s some justice in this godless, Lou-Reed-free universe after all. Take heart.

I don’t think the triumph of Bad Grandpa is especially telling. Nothing else posed much of a challenge, and if Paramount had released Paranormal Activity 5 this weekend it would have opened even bigger. But Johnny Knoxville gets another notch on his belt — Phil says it’s fun — and everything else chugs along as usual.
