I’m Feeling Conflicted

So, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters made $19 million to top the box office charts this weekend.

On the one hand, I’m happy for Gemma Arterton, who’s a very nice person and deserves a little recognition — especially since she manages to keep her dignity and actually be funny once or twice in the course of the movie. Having had no luck registering in either the Clash of the Titans remake or that horrible Prince of Persia movie, it’s nice that people will finally know who she is.

On the other hand: She’s in Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters. And what the hell is wrong with people that they went to see this crap and ignored the genuinely entertaining and inventive action of The Last Stand for a second weekend? Yadda yadda yadda, this is why we can’t have  nice things.

At least Mama did decent business, taking second place with $12.8 million,  and  Movie 43 tanked, coming in seventh with a piddly $5 million.

Still. Bottom line, people flocked to see Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters this weekend. The earth is doomed.
