My latest Sympatico/MSN DVD column is up, comparing and contrasting “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” and “Superbad”.
Yeah, I know, it’s like comparing imported heirloom apples from Johnny Appleseed’s lost orchard to really, really lumpy oranges: One movie cost the earth and is just sort of okay, and the other was made for almost nothing, looks like someone sneezed on the interpositive, and might be the year’s funniest movie.*
I don’t think you’re supposed to come out of a three-hour, trilogy-capping blockbuster marveling at the consistency of the costumes and sets, is all I’m saying. Though I guess it worked well enough for “The Return of the King”.
* I shall need to watch “Hot Fuzz” again, preferably in high definition, before making my definitive ruling.
