Don’t Go In The Woods

Man with hat
This is Peter.
Beast with ... claws?
This is Jeremy Riverbeast, I think?

This week’s episode of Someone Else’s Movie isn’t a Christmas show per se, but there’s still a Yuletide connection: My guest, TIFF programmer and Laser Blast Film Society co-host Peter Kuplowsky, is behind that screening of Dial Code Santa Claus I mentioned yesterday.

That wasn’t his choice for the show, though; Peter went with Don’t Let the Riverbeast Get You!, Charles Roxburgh and Matt Farley’s very strange, very earnest 2012 creature feature in which Farley plays a small-town pariah who comes home to pick up his life after a traumatic incident. (I’m overselling the dramatic aspects; he saw a monster, no one believed him, and he fled in shame.)

It’s a really weird movie, and it’s hard to tell from one moment to the next whether that’s intentional … which is why Peter loves it, and why he made me watch it. And that made for an interesting episode … even with the unexpected digression into the worlds of the Insidious and Saw franchises. Although I suppose that might have made things even more interesting.
