The Oscar nominations drop today, and in addition to my inevitable rage-tweeting about them, if you’re near a radio or the internet you can catch my commentary on CBC’s Q at 10 am, where I’ll be part of a Very Special Academy Awards Panel with Johanna Schneller and Rad Simonpillai. This will be convivial and edifying, I bet. Also, Gill Deacon is hosting and she’s fun. Click the “Listen Live” tab at the top right of the page, or wait for the segment to go up later today.
There will also be the inevitable web piece for NOW, which I wrote on a plane to New York because that’s the kind of day I’m having. A day made somewhat sadder by the loss of Alan Rickman, whom I eulogized in the departure lounge. This week, quite frankly, sucks.
And the new issue of NOW is out, but the film section is a little small given that our coverage of the week’s biggest movies — 13 Hours, Ride Along 2 and, um, Norm of the North — won’t be live until tomorrow. C’est la vie.
Great piece on Alan Rickman in NOW. So many great performances in such diverse types of roles. You did forget to mention that he was as anatomically correct as a Ken doll, but other than that…
Goddamit! Bowie’s going to, deservedly, get all kinds of appreciation as a creative, groundbreaking genius, but Rickman was an absolute master of his craft. Like you said in your memoriam…what he could do with a slight facial expression, an inflection of his voice…he could do over-the-top brilliantly but never had to. I will miss the movies he will never make now.
