Cops and Robbers

This week’s episode of Someone Else’s Movie is the first of two TIFF specials that wind up exploring the highs and lows of genre cinema. Total coincidence, but also a perfect karmic convergence of filmmakers and inspiration. You’ll see.

Today, though, we can focus on Aaron Poole — who’ll be at the festival as an actor in Albert Shin’s Clifton Hill (premiering Thursday night), and as the writer and director of his first short film Oracle (premiering Sunday night) — as he sits down for a long look at Michael Mann’s Heat, the 1995 policier that still stands as one of the best movies of its type, and possibly as the summation of Mann’s career. If you haven’t seen it in a while, this is a fine excuse to revisit it … but Aaron’s memories (and occasional re-enactments) are vivid enough to pull you along if you choose to listen without a refresher. This was a lot of fun to record.

And don’t worry about walking away in 30 seconds when the heat’s around the corner; the great thing about podcasts is that you can take them with you!
