Hey, look! A relatively light week! Whatever will we do with ourselves? Oh, right, eat candy.
Angry Inuk: After strong showings at Hot Docs and ImagineNative, Alethea Arnaquq-Baril’s documentary about the seal hunt rolls into its commercial run. Susan is in its corner.
The Handmaiden: Susan wasn’t high on Park Chan-wook’s adaptation of Sarah Waters’ novel Fingersmith, but hearing her talk about why during TIFF just made me more interested to see it.
Inferno: Look, I don’t blame Ron Howard, Tom Hanks and David Koepp for making Dan Brown movies. They’re profitable, and everybody gets to go to Europe and eat well and see the sights. I just wished the results weren’t so … well, dopey.
Miss Hokusai: Keiichi Hara’s delicate anime is a lovely match of form and subject matter — and though it moves slowly, that’s exactly the right speed. Ah, just go see it, you’ll understand.
Moonlight: You’ve been hearing a lot about Barry Jenkins’ triptych drama spanning a decade and a half in the life of a conflicted black kid from Miami. Here’s why: It’s a goddamn masterpiece. Rad rates this highly. I’d go even higher. This is one of the year’s best movies.
Oasis: Supersonic: I’ve spent years wondering whether Liam Gallagher was a knobhead or a bellend. Thanks to Asif Kapadia and Mat Whitecross, I now know he’s both! So that’s a relief.
The Violin Teacher: Yeah, “Dangerous Minds in the slums of Sao Paolo” is kind of a weak pitch. But then Sergio Machado abandons melodrama for verite, and the results are quite striking.
And that’s everything! Happy Halloweekend, everybody!
