Thor: The Dark World did spectacular business over the weekend, grossing $86.1 million in its first three days of North American release. (It had opened to $109.4 million internationally last week, suggesting things would be pretty good over here.)
So now, I guess, the expectations are pretty high for the Russo brothers’ Captain America: The Winter Soldier in April and James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy in August. Because if Thor can make half a billion dollars globally — which doesn’t seem quite as far-fetched today as it might have two weeks ago — then anything’s possible.
In other news, Jackass Presents Bad Grandpa held onto second place with $11.3 million, just edging out Free Birds with $11.2 million and Last Vegas with $11.1 million. Ender’s Game trailed in fifth with $10.2 million, and Gravity chugged along with $8.4 million.
And look, over in seventh place: It’s 12 Years a Slave, its release going wide enough to allow it to chart with $6.6 million. It’s only going to get stronger from here.
