And the Hits Just Keep On Coming

maleficentWell, there you go. Any new movie that opens in enough theatres is going to be a monster.

Disney’s Maleficent was the latest smash new release, grossing $70 million over the weekend despite mixed reviews and a general sense that no one knew exactly what the hell it was supposed to be. So, yay I guess?

I’ll cheer a little harder for the stumble of A Million Ways to Die in the West, because (a) it’s an awfully lazy comedy and (b) if Seth MacFarlane cannot completely be stopped, at least he can be hindered a little in his quest to plaster his smug grin across the planet. Million Ways opened with $ 17.1 million, which landed it in third as X-Men: Days of Future Past easily outpaced it with a second-place take of $32.6 million.

And in international news, Edge of Tomorrow opened to $20 million in a few international markets, suggesting next weekend’s box-office numbers will be just as impressive as the current list. It’s nice when things work out.
