The frickin’ minions kicked Tonto’s ass up and down the megaplex this weekend, with Despicable Me 2 earning $142.1 million over the holiday to trounce The Lone Ranger, which pulled in just $48.9 million in the same frame.

Now, Despicable Me 2 is an hour shorter and in 3D, which it can have more screenings in a single day and charge more for its tickets, but even so: This is a proper stomping.

Maybe they should have let Johnny Depp play both the Ranger and Tonto. I’m sure he suggested it at some point.
