We’re still waiting on final numbers for the weekend’s box office, since yesterday’s projections were too close to call — though it’s a certainty that “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance” has opened in third place, behind last week’s big draws, “Safe House” and “The Vow”.
The “Ghost Rider” sequel grossed about $22 million, while Sunday’s studio estimates have “Safe House” earning $24 million and “The Vow” making $23.6 million. But that’s a margin that could shift in either direction once the final receipts come in — and this is the President’s Day weekend in the U.S., so today’s activity is unpredictable.
What we can say with some assurance is that McG’s loathsome “This Means War” opened with a relatively dismal $17.6 million, landing it in fifth place behind “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island”, still going strong with $20.1 million. I will take that as a small victory.
