A Little Provocation

I’ve been a fan of Callie Hernandez for a few years now, ever since I saw her in back-to-back screenings of Blair Witch and La La Land and thought, “Holy crap, that’s the same person.”

She’s gone on to have a really interesting career, turning up in everything from Alien: Covenant and Under the Silver Lake to The Flight Attendant and that new Jennifer Lopez comedy Shotgun Wedding, and this week the release of the genre-adjacent dark comedy Jethica  gave me the chance to book her for an episode of Someone Else’s Movie.

And Callie wanted to talk about Catherine Breillat’s Anatomy of Hell, the 2004 two-hander that finds Amira Casar and Rocco SIffredi  entering a philosophical battle of wills around the male gaze, female self-image and basic biology. Is it empty provocation or profound self-examination? Can it be both? We considered all the possibilities over the course of a really engaging hour, and I’m delighted to be able to share it with you.

Subscribe on Apple PodcastsGoogle PlayStitcher and/or Spotify,  or download the episode directly from the web; it’s all fine by me. And then you can go catch up on your Shiny Things readings; last week, I reviewed the new Criterion editions of Love Jones and Hollywood Shuffle and dug into Universal’s excellent 4K release of The Fabelmans. Have you subscribed yet? You should subscribe. I’m going to be really annoying about this.

Also! Tickets just went live at tiff.net for next month’s free See the North screening on March 15th, which is the first one I’ve programmed and will be introducing; we’re showing Renuka Jeyapalan’s lovely romantic drama Stay the Night, and Renuka will be joining me for a Q&A after the film. I’m really happy to be able to put the movie in front of a local crowd, and if you’re in town I hope you can come join us.

I did say it was free, right?
