From One Hero to Another

On this week’s episode of Someone Else’s Movie, I talk to actor-turned-filmmaker Amy Jo Johnson, whose spiky second feature Tammy’s Always Dying hits VOD on Friday. (I liked it at TIFF! You should watch it!)

Amy Jo picked another actor’s picture, in both senses of the world: Captain Fantastic marked the directorial debut of the actor Matt Ross — that’s right, Gavin Belson from Silicon Valley — but it’s also an exquisite showcase for Viggo Mortensen, who packs a lifetime of eccentricity, defensiveness and hurt into his two hours as the movie’s counterculture paterfamilias hero.

I’m not as big a fan of the movie as Amy Jo, but we found plenty to talk about. Wanna listen? Subscribe on Apple PodcastsGoogle Play and Stitcher and get it immediately, or download it directly from the web! That’s what it’s there for!

And while you’re podfetching, check out today’s episode of NOW What, where I talk to Nat Manzocco and Robin LeBlanc about the means by in which Toronto’s bars are trying to survive the pandemic. It’s a surprisingly light conversation, given the general sense of gathering doom. But of course gallows humor is all we have left.
