So The Croods — which is apparently pretty good — finally dethroned Oz the Great and Powerful at the North American box office, earning $44.7 million to take first place.
Oz actually ranks third this week, with just $22 million. Antoine Fuqua’s shameless Die Hard knockoff Olympus Has Fallen came second with $30.5 million; sure, it probably would have done better with a PG-13 rating, but then Fuqua wouldn’t have been able to luxuriate in the slaughter of secondary characters the way he likes.
Of course, the real shocker of the week is Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers landing in fifth place with $5 million in its first week of wide release in the U.S. (It opens here on Friday.) I mean, who would have ever thought the director of Julien Donkey-Boy and Trash Humpers would ever crack the top ten?
Also, I’m in London right now. Anybody want a Sightseers Blu-ray? A Region B player is required, and also a tolerance for excellence.
I know nothing of Sightseers beyond your review, but sure, I’m in.
